Unitil Closes Acquisition of Two New Hampshire Water Utilities
Unitil Corporation has completed its purchase of two Aquarion water companies in New Hampshire, capping a deal first announced in May 2025.
Unitil Corporation, the New Hampshire-based utility listed on the NYSE under the ticker UTL, has finalized its acquisition of Aquarion Water Company of New Hampshire, Inc. and Abenaki Water Co., Inc. from the Aquarion Water Authority. The transaction, which closed June 30, 2026, marks a significant expansion of Unitil's service portfolio beyond its traditional electricity and natural gas operations into water utility territory.
The deal's origins trace back to May 6, 2025, when Unitil and the Aquarion Water Authority first publicly disclosed the Stock Purchase Agreement. The agreement was subsequently amended during the intervening months, with one notable modification narrowing the scope of the transaction to cover only the two New Hampshire-based water companies rather than a potentially broader set of assets originally contemplated.

Before the acquisition could close, Unitil was required to secure regulatory sign-off from both the New Hampshire and Maine Public Utilities Commissions — a procedural hurdle that reflects the cross-state regulatory complexity even relatively modest utility deals can entail. The company confirmed that all conditions of the amended agreement were materially satisfied as of the closing date, clearing the path for formal completion.
For investors and utility-sector observers, the move signals Unitil's strategic intent to diversify its regulated asset base. Water utilities, like electric and gas distribution networks, generate predictable, rate-regulated revenue streams — making them an attractive addition for a company already experienced in navigating the regulatory frameworks that govern essential infrastructure. Whether this acquisition represents a one-off opportunistic purchase or a preview of further water-sector ambitions remains a question worth watching.
