Lumentum Positioned to Gain as AI Drives Optical Networking Demand
Co-packaged optics adoption is accelerating inside AI data centers, and Lumentum may be among the clearest beneficiaries of that infrastructure shift.
The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure is reshaping demand across the semiconductor and networking supply chain, and optical components makers like Lumentum Holdings are drawing renewed attention from analysts tracking where AI capital spending ultimately lands. As hyperscalers race to build out data centers capable of handling the bandwidth requirements of large language models and GPU clusters, the photonics layer of that infrastructure is becoming a critical bottleneck — and a significant investment opportunity.
Co-packaged optics, or CPO, represents one of the most consequential architectural shifts underway in high-performance networking. Unlike traditional pluggable optical modules, CPO integrates optical components directly alongside switch silicon, dramatically reducing power consumption and latency at scale. For AI workloads that depend on ultra-fast, high-density interconnects between thousands of accelerators, that efficiency gain is not marginal — it is foundational. Lumentum, as a vertically integrated supplier of photonic components including lasers and modulators, sits at a structurally advantageous position in that transition.

The risk calculus, however, deserves equal attention. CPO adoption timelines have historically slipped, and Lumentum competes in a space that includes well-capitalized rivals. The company's revenue trajectory will depend heavily on how quickly hyperscaler customers commit to CPO-based switch architectures and whether Lumentum can maintain design wins through that transition.
