Ledger, the hardware wallet company best known for its cold-storage security devices, is pushing into a new frontier: letting artificial intelligence agents manage cryptocurrency activity on a user's behalf without those agents ever gaining custody of the underlying private keys. The concept attempts to resolve one of the central tensions in autonomous finance — how do you allow software to act independently while preserving the foundational security principle that only the owner controls the keys?
The approach reflects a broader industry conversation about agentic AI, where software systems don't just advise but actually execute. In the crypto context, that means an AI could theoretically rebalance a portfolio, pay a bill in stablecoins, or interact with a decentralized protocol — all without a human clicking "confirm" each time.
